One example of the excesses in global consumption of sand is the Palm
Island project in Dubai. This aerial view shows the Palm Jumeirah. Some
385 million tons of sand was used to reclaim the land to make this
construction possible. The Palm Island and similar projects have
literally changed the maritime landscape off the city's coast.
