County finds, destroys 2,000 pot plants

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY, OK -- Investigators want to know who planted and cultivated millions of dollars worth of marijuana near the Lincoln County-Pottawatomie County line. Kickapoo Tribal Police received an anonymous tip about these plants two months ago. Who's responsible for them, however, remains a mystery.


"For this area, this is a pretty large find," says Kickapoo Tribal Police Sergeant Todd Beesley. "Because it's so remotely located and back in the woods, we had no idea [how large] it was 'till we got on the ground."

Multiple agencies, including the Lincoln County District Attorney's Drug Task Force, found approximately 2,167 pot plants.

D.A. Richard Smothermon says weeks of surveillance failed to catch any suspects, who most likely made their way to and from the crops at night.

Since it's close to harvest time, Smothermon says a decision had to be made.

"Do we risk some of it being harvested and being put out on the streets just to catch someone? The answer in this case, with that amount, was no," he says. "It would have required extensive manpower to watch it for 24 hours a day, especially with how big a field this was."

Tuesday, the plants were cut down and hauled away to a separate locations to be burned.

The street value was $2.1 million.

The drug I started with was tobacco, then alcohol, then pot... Pot is not a gateway drug..Ciggarettes are... Tobacco is just a legal drug..

wow. i feel alot safer now. Waste of tax dollars. Jails are full and if this guy's caught, we as taxpayers have to foot the bill @ avg $28,000yr to house this person/plus medical. Also the Marijuana guy gets more time in jail then a Child molestor. Fight some real crime.

This is a travesty. Pot's the only drug that's never killed anyone and they constantly make raids on it.It's not like people can't get to it now anyway. If it were legal it could be taxed and some needed revenue could be brought into our economy. Legalize pot now!

News flash... Its called "WEED" for a reason, it is just that. The strains of marijuana being planted within the last five years or so are modified to keep coming back with no help from anybody but mother nature herself, year after year after year. This could of been planted years ago and has been abandoned for ages. Very few growers keep the same location from one cultivating season to the next for this exact reason. Somebody always narcs out the crops location. If you look at the photo even of this operation it hasn't been pruned or harvested at all this year. Which hurts their profits, these farmers are long gone.

Pot is legal in california. Effective Jan 1, 2011 farmers can begin growing it for profit. I wonder what security will be like around these pot fields. Prescriptions are not that hard to get these days.

Yes exactly. They're doing what I've suggested. California's in a world of hurt because the state is bankrupt, and they know they could raise some serious revenue on it if they legalized pot. Come on, why can't the rest of America get in on this?

Drinking is way more detrimental to your health than pot. And before you say that pot is worse than smoking cigarettes, that's all just government propaganda. It is worth a lot of money. Look at booze. It's legal and it's big business. Dido with cigarettes. If we legalized it and distributed it, people would not have to go to dangerous criminals to buy it and the insane drug wars in Mexico could be lessened. Course, I'm for complete legalization of all drugs, but I guess let's just stick to pot. Look at Amsterdam. They attract so much business because of legalized prostitution and marijuana. I know OK is a God fearing state, but if we want to balance the budget, then let's give people what they want and tax it. Alot of money could be made. Let the church people go to church and let the rest of us toke and make merry.

According to a new poll from Public Policy Polling, California voter support for Proposition 19, a statewide voter initiative on the ballot this November which would legalize the use of small quantities of marijuana by adults for any reason, is running at 52 to 36 percent.
