An emergency official told local news channel WCYB that 50-60 people were injured and 12-15 patients were taken to hospitals by ambulance or helicopters.
There have been no reports of fatalities and none of the injuries was believed to be life-threatening.
The car was driven by an elderly man who may have lost consciousness or “had some medical issue” and drove into the crowd, Reuters reports citing volunteer fire department chief Ben Sanders.
According to witness accounts, the car had a handicapped parking sticker.
“He was hitting hikers,” said Vickie Harmon, a witness.``I saw hikers just go everywhere.”
