It has been thirty years since two African American men were wrongly
convicted of raping and murdering an 11-year old girl in Lumberton,
North Carolina.
Now, the two of them are free, after DNA evidence proved the wrong men had been convicted.
This Tuesday a judge ordered the two half-brothers Henry Lee McCollum, 50, and Leon Brown, 46 to be released from prison.
In addition to the DNA evidence, which now has implicated another man who lived a block from the location where the girl’s body was located, it was determined that police coerced confessions from the two men – both of whom happen to be mentally disabled. Both were also teenagers at the time of their convictions.
These coerced confessions were the only evidence against them.
To add insult to injury, Roscoe Artis, the man who is now suspected of committing rape and murder, had already confessed to committing similar crimes around the very same time. So why did police ever focus on these two brothers?
