The Experiment

I was a naturally curious kid...it must have been around 1966, my family and I were going to Gallup New Mexico.

We lived on the Navajo Reservation and I think Gallup was about 60 miles away.

We stopped to get gas before the trip and I convinced my mom that I would probably die on the way if I didn't get a bottle of Coke and some Sweet-Tarts.

So, we are finally on the highway, I'm drinking my Coke and eating my Sweet-Tarts like a good little American boy when I have a question for my parents.

"What would happen if I put a Sweet-Tart in my Coke?"

"Don't do it, it would probably fizz and make a horrible mess.'

"Okay."

About five more miles down the road, I couldn't stand it anymore, I had to conduct the experiment.

Plop, plop (I put two in for good measure) guess what happened, yep it fizzed all over the place and made a horrible mess in the backseat of my dad's 1964 Mustang.

The worst part, for me, was that it went all over my pants and it looked like I had wet my pants.

Once we got to Gallup, pride would not let me go into a grocery store looking like I had wet my pants, so I set in the car the whole time.

That's about all I remember about that trip.

  2. My dad must have been in a good mood that day, I don't remember him getting very mad about it.
Don't get me wrong though, he could get VERY mad, I was lucky not to get "the belt", kind of like capital punishment for a kid.
