Charles Rangel "The tail wags the dog!"
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Americans would have to sign up for a new military draft after turning 18 if the incoming chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee has his way.
New York Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel said Sunday he sees his idea as a way to deter politicians from launching wars. He believes a draft would bolster U.S. troop levels that are currently insufficient to cover potential future action in Iran, North Korea and Iraq.
"There's no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft, and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm's way," Rangel said.
Rangel, a veteran of the Korean War who has unsuccessfully sponsored legislation on conscription in the past, said he will propose a measure early next year.
In 2003, he proposed a draft covering people age 18 to 26. This year, he offered a plan to mandate military service for men and women between age 18 and 42. It went nowhere in the Republican-led Congress.
you know what? if we weren't at war and fighting ..I would agree with him..I think everyone should be required to do 2 years military service..and use them for border patrol, help build houses in la./miss and places where they can help...build roads, do hospital work, be teachers assistants..etc..that's males and females..2 years of your life from 18 to 20..and get 4 years free college as payment..or something along those lines..
ReplyDeleteYDG Why force people to join something that people are volenteering to join? Lets draft people to work at fast food places, sure they will do it for the money but lets make it where they have to go to jail if they choose another job. (Same Logic)
ReplyDeleteLets take away choices from people, make them do our bidding.
I'm with you Tex, screw that. I don't think anyone should be forced into military service.
ReplyDeleteI dunno to me the draft was not the answer years ago so I can't see it being the answer today. What the answer is I do not know. All I know is I would hate the thought of my son [or anyone's child] not having the choice whether to or not.
