In Phillip K. Dick’s short story, The Minority Report, murder and other crimes are prevented through the efforts of three mutants — called “precogs” — who can see the future.

The Department of Homeland Security does not have precogs able to look into the future and reveal crime. Instead, they have the next best thing — Future Attribute Screening Technologies.

Originally titled Project Hostile Intent, the purpose of the program is to detect “hostile thoughts” by screening people at the border and — as explained in the video below — at public events. According to DHS science spokesman John Verrico, in 2008 the program is capable of 78% accuracy on mal-intent detection, and 80% on deception. On July 24, 2008 then DHS Under Secretary Jay Cohen stated that the goal of the program is to create a new technology that would work in real time as opposed to after a crime is already committed.

  1. I bet they don't stop with polite questions like they do in the video.
"Do you know of any illegal activities?"
